The simple construction and exchangeable blades provide easy maintenance. Use of high performance water lubricated bearings and high-tech materials further enhances the system’s reliability and strength. From the beginning of the EPS™ design process, sand infiltration and water pollution were taken into account. The innovative solution is to use the surrounding water for both lubrication and cooling of the electric ring motor driving the blades. This is highly effective and exceptionally friendly for the environment. The EPS™ thruster offers much lower sound levels than conventional thrusters. The primary source of noise pollution with thrusters is the gap between the propeller blades and the tunnel. The EPS™ thruster has neither gear nor propeller shaft. The blades are connected to an outer ring. Without the clearance between propeller and tube, the source of cavitation disappears. As the electromotor driving the thrusters is integrated within the outer ring, the EPS™ has an ultra compact design and takes up very little space. The EPS™ thruster is also available in a compact retractable version, designed to suit the specific needs of sailing yachts and fast motor yachts. An uninterrupted hull shape helps keep drag to a minimum and will contribute to smooth sailing. The success of the EPS™ thruster led to the development of a propulsion variant, the EPS™ azimuthing retractable thruster. This system offers excellent manoeuvrability and can turn 360 degrees in its own length. Its blades are optimized for one direction rather than two. Combined with the capability of continuous use, this thruster can be deployed as main propulsion. The compact design means it can be placed in the skeg or underneath a swimming platform for storage during cruising. When keeping station, the 360º azimuthing thruster allows the main engines to be stopped. This significantly enhances passenger comfort. |
