The
Lürssen company grew big with small boats - developing from a
modest boat building shed to a leading manufacturer of luxury
yachts, naval ships and other high-quality special-purpose
vessels.
When
Friedrich Lürssen founded his boat yard in 1875, he began with
manufacturing small work-boats. But soon, he successfully built
and sold rowing boats for sport clubs and by 1890, his firm
belonged to the pioneers for motor boats in Germany. In 1912, a
Lürssen speedboat, with Otto Lürssen at the helm, won a number
of prizes in the prestigious Monaco race.
Simultaneously,
Lürssen shipyard achieved competence and success in motor
yachts. Between 1924 and 1932, a substantial number of
yacht tenders and notable motor yachts were exported to the USA.
This solid tradition has been preserved over the times: Today, Lürssen
is world-renowned. Its client list includes international
navies, industrial leaders and private personages. Each
appreciates the reliability, comfort and workmanship of a Lürssen
vessel.
Four
generations later, Friedrich Lürssen´s descendants are still
at the helm of the shipyard as it has entered the 21st century.
CREATIVE
DESIGN
With
more than 100 years of expertise, Lürssen´s excellence in the
area of ship design is unparalleled. A custom computer design
program for a three-dimensional CAD System is accessed by a
staff of over one hundred naval architects and engineers.
Working with this system, workshop drawings for hulls,
decks, and interiors can be implemented with the utmost
precision. Documentation is transmitted directly from the Lürssen
program, assuring accurate fitting and quality in compliance
with the highest International Classification Standards. Lürssen´s
design group can also be called upon for cooperative ventures.
The in-house staff will collaborate with owners and outside
designers in seeking creative options and design solutions with
regard to both exterior and interior plans. Practical seagoing
essentials are married with technological advances and aesthetic
elements of grace and beauty.
HIGH
TECHNOLOGY
At
Lürssen, the application of high-technology in the
construction of yachts reaches state-of-the-art levels. Lürssen
has developed a Sectional Construction System that sharply
contrasts with the more traditional, time intensive ways of
shipbuilding. Yachts and ships are divided into self-contained
sections, each honed, moulded, and finished to a certain point
and then assembled into a single unit.
Lürssen´s
technically complex sectional construction allows for maximum
work efficiency and flexibility. There is constant project
attention: no downtime or stoppage. Should problems arise in one
area, such as delays in furnishings, the work on other sections
continues.
At
Lürssen´s Advanced Welding Centre, materials are cut and
processed on one of the world’s largest, automated lines.
Laser
and dry plasma cutting guarantee even torsion-free construction
and eliminate mill scale. Throughout the process, as part
of Lürssen´s constant quality control, construction is X-rayed
assuring occlusion-free seams. This system eliminates the need
for the finishing work associated with tack welds and therefore
reducing construction time.
At
Lürssen, the application of the latest technology to the art of
shipbuilding proves that its partnership of quality,
craftsmanship, and value are not just empty words.
QUALITY
ENGINEERING
Lürssen
sets the same high standards in its engineering capabilities as
it does with design, construction and service. Design and
engineering staff, as well as a host of master craftsmen, move
vessels swiftly, efficiently and safely to completion. Lürssen
engineers consult on initial concepts, designs, and
requirements. This gives a distinct advantage. Each team member
is involved in problem spotting and solution development
throughout the entire design and production process. Working
together, the teams interact and present creative solutions to
practical problems.
Lürssen´s
craftsmen have been trained and qualified to handle the most
exacting and complex challenges, encouraging and supporting
research and development of new technology in every field from
pipefitting to electrical and mechanical engineering.
REFIT,
PAINT & REPAIR
Lürssen
firmly believes final fit-out and painting can only be executed
in an ideal setting with perfect working conditions. To
that end, Lürssen invested in an environmentally sensitive
fit-out and painting facility. The massive structure is the
largest and most technologically advanced facility of its
type, accommodating ships up to 100 meters with expansion
possibilities up to 125 meters. The halls were designed and
finished with a special interior coating developed for Lürssen
to guarantee a dust-free environment.
Filtered
air is circulated at computer maintained, optimal,
climate-controlled temperatures. All of these elements
assure the finest results in paint and varnish. Lürssen also
ser-vices existing vessels with superior repair and maintenance
capabilities. For vessels in remote locations our specially
trained mobile service group can effect a Lürssen quality
technical repair anywhere. From major renovations to on-site
restorations to year-round services which keep a vessel
operating at its best, Lürssen´s team of experts are at the
ready for its clients.
INTERIOR
CRAFTSMANSHIP
While
much state of-the-art technology can be applied to the design,
engineering and speed factors of a yacht, Lürssen remains
respectful to the traditional values which must be applied to
interior work requiring master craftsmen.
In
seeking the perfect translation of design specifications of
yacht interiors, Lürssen works with interior designers.
Teams of traditional craftsmen, many of whom have followed their
fathers and grandfathers into their trade, handcraft the
mouldings, polish the wood, and lay the marble in ways that
cannot be replaced by modern machinery.
THE
SHIPYARD
Working
with teams of specialists, Friedrich and Peter Lürssen have
expanded the shipyards' international reputation.
The
present shipyard sets new standards in technology, design,
ecology and safety.
More than fifty thousand square meters of space have been
modernized and turned into an environmentally-sensitive working
place. Yachts are now manufactured In 4 locations, three near
Bremen and the river Weser and one on the Kiel canal In
Rendsburg. Work Is carried out In environment protected sheds on
land and In three covered dry docks. More than one nautical mile
of deep water quays run along the banks of the River Weser,
which serves the international seaport of Bremen and along the
Kiel canal.
Operating
under the credo that superior quality can only be achieved under
the best possible conditions, Lürssen allows no compromise in
its work force, working place, and work scheduling. Job
security, protection of the environment and efficiency are key
elements at Lürssen shipyard. The return for this investment? Lürssen´s
ability to offer ships of the highest quality at competitive prices.
